We have been back home for over a week now, and I’m well settled into my old routines that make home what it is. Jon is up north with his parents, seeing his nephew who has been growing quickly while his uncle is a thousand miles away. My own daughter Karina attends school in Boston, and I call and text and email, but hi-tech fails to ease the heartache, and I will find a way to see her soon. Ian is happily in his day-to-day with his girlfriend, who missed him terribly while we were on the road. Good for you, Ian. Jon and I gave him a hard time about the long calls in the night, but in the end, we were jealous. As my mom said while my smiling little dog Ali helped me unpack, it’s always nice to be home.

We rolled well over 2,000 miles during our arduous two weeks, both on the bike and in Nola, and the road became our home away from home. We each settled into our own territory on the bus, and before long, the confusion of clothes, gear, and endless cables and wires that connected us with the world taught us tolerance and patience, and became a comfort in its own right as well. The roads we traveled took us to people who loved to see us, and some who shared their stories. We moved on with confidence and excitement, and looked ahead to where tomorrow’s road would take us.

The entire route had been planned in advance. We needed no map for the road home. Biloxi, Mobile, Tallahassee, Tampa. Home. Perhaps someone who lived in New Orleans on August 29, 2005, and has not returned home, is still looking for the map with the return route clearly marked. Four years, two months, and nineteen days later. Does anyone have that map?

Two weeks (and one year) after the start, I finally made it! What a great reception they had for me. About 2 dozen cheering volunteers and homeowners, the founder Liz McCartney, a huge cake, and a yellow ribbon stretched across the road greeted me as I rode the final block of our long journey. Very nice of everyone to do this. Thank you! As the sun set, and we said our goodbyes until the next adventure, we considered how to spend the next morning filming in New Orleans. After a quick check of the approaching Hurricane Ida, we decided to count our blessings of good weather, and Jon’s and Nola’s stable health, and rigged for an overnight run home. This was the one and only time I was able to sleep in my “bedroom” at the rear of the bucking Nola. Weary, but glad to be home, we arrived in Tampa Saturday afternoon. We went our ways, but we will be back. Thank you for following along, and for your prayers and inspiration that helped to carry this project through the early stages. The stories of the Katrina refugees are starting to reach me. Now the real work begins. See you soon.

This is our last day on the road to New Orleans, and I am about to lift the bike out of Nola for the final 75 miles of our much-shortened run. I’ve bonded some with the bike, and I’m thinking perhaps I should name “her” ,too. This ride will be the easiest, and the most enjoyable. As I approach the city, I am glad to be up ahead of my alarm in anticipation of coming home to a place I began a love affair with two years ago. The people of this warm city, and the state of Louisiana, are always with me. Their friendly, welcoming ways draw me back, and I so look forward to riding in to my adopted home, into the seeming open arms of a place that’s found a permanent corner in my heart. Everyone I meet smiles. What a genuine, soothing comfort that is. That is New Orleans.

See you there!

Pain comes in all strengths and sizes. During our 2 weeks on the road, and well before that, our director Jon has been experiencing various degrees of pain from certain issues that have dogged him relentlessly, only easing long enough to let him appreciate what Normal is. This is crippling, annoying, tiring, and frustrating pain. Ask Jon for the definition of pain, and he will smile, and wonder where to begin.

As I type this, my left leg is giving me a reminder that I’ve done 149 miles on the bike in 2 days, and that I didn’t work out enough before I hit the road for Louisiana. This is a fleeting, temporary message, and we can choose to take heed, and address the cause, or tough it out, hoping it will pass soon. We try to move on, and forget it.

Heartbreak. Books have been written about how best to face this demon that can bury us alive in anguish, depression, sorrow, and self pity. Suffering of a magnitude unmeasured tears at so many of us who hurt so deeply within our ravaged hearts that some never find their way to love again. Crushing, terrible hurt.

Some feel all three types of pain I’ve listed, and at once. It lingers, and circles around. It dives deep, and grabs hold. It annoys and reminds us when we don’t expect it. It lives at different levels in our lives, and never really moves on. This is the pain felt by those who have lost their homes, and feel they’ll never find that comfortable place again. Many from New Orleans carry this array of pain, wherever they may now live. Every day, they carry on, quietly and carefully, so as not to stir the embers. It’s time to listen. They will help us learn how not to let this happen again.

This aired today at noon, 6, and 11. (The link to this is on the Press page). They gave us 3 minutes of air time, and we were so thankful that the word of what we are doing is being passed over the airwaves here! Of course, the moms have been emailing everyone they can in their known universe, and then some. We are here in New Roads for the night, 83 miles later on the bike. Nola chugged along well, after an early morning fix to keep a battery cable from burning up and knocking out our onboard power. We had a beautiful, warm sunny clear day that carried me right along on the bike, and even had one man come up to us who recognized me from the TV broadcast, and wanted to donate money to the cause! The crew was all smiles at the end of the day, as for the first time we accomplished what we set out to do in our plan for the day. We can feel the momentum gaining a foothold, and the months ahead will bring the stories to us, we’re sure. Thursday and Friday will mean 66 and 82 mile days on the bike, with our schedule shortened to just 3 days to complete the 231 miles from Alexandria. but I’ll make it, and the team will roll on into LSU’s main campus in Baton Rouge while I skirt the city to cover ground more easily. People are becoming aware of us now, and we are starting to feel To Bring Us Home can help make a difference after a stutter start. Our successes are theirs, in the long run. Running on past Baton Rouge Thursday! “I feel really good about today,” Jon says. Yes, we do!

The rim had a slight defect that was not protected by the liner. The rim actually punctured the tube from the inside, once before I left Tampa, and no one caught it, and then again on the ride out from Shreveport. All that needed to happen was for me to hit a tough bump, and the rear tire was done, regardless of the excellent Armadillo tires I had mounted just for this ride. A new tube wouldn’t have lasted very long, and I would be walking again. Thanks to Mike Hopkins, the owner of the bike shop, we were fixed up solid very quickly, and on our way to our overnight at Ihop. NBC is looking forward to seeing us in the am, then I’m on my way towards Baton Rouge. Oh. Ian is sick now, too. Yes, that means I’m the only healthy one remaining on the team. Game on!

This doesn’t happen. I suppose this was a sign that Jon is faring better with the pain that has haunted him these past weeks. Ian, who usually sleeps in, was up early and ready to meet the day also. Maybe it was the beautiful, seductive little town we have since left behind, Natchitoches. A beaming bright moon watched over us for the night as we slept warm and snug in Nola, and life slowed for us here as none of us wanted to leave. We talked of how we would love to retire in a town like this someday. The city was just beginning to hang the light displays for their nationally-recognized Christmas decorating extravaganza. Everyone, everywhere, takes the time to smile, say good morning, and mean it. What a great place to live. We will be back, we know.

During our short stay here, we learned that many Katrina refugees decided to stay here, preferring the comfort and stability of this prosperous, accommodating city to the questionable future of their beloved home they were forced to leave for so long. Do I wonder why they don’t return to New Orleans? No. They were just looking for a place they could call their own. A storm took that from them, and we were too slow in helping them find their way back. It’s a shame someone should have to make that choice.

Jon is in pain again this evening, and I watch him closely as we choose to press on.

We are overnighting in the quaint, friendly college town, Natchitoches. I dare you to pronounce this name correctly. I have heard it, but I can’t repeat it. Great dinner at The Landing. We had a very hard time choosing something from the great menu. We’re here because my bike didn’t make it. Does this surprise you? 32 miles out on Day 1, The bike freed itself of all of the God-given air in the rear tire. So, we went for a walk. 7 miles later, smoking Nola picked me up, and in a rare show of temper, burst into flames for a quick moment, just long enough to hold the attention of nearby Ian. If I had been thinking quickly, I could have solved two problems at once by beating down the flames with my bike. But, the dinner and dessert was very good, excellent in fact, and once again, we laugh hysterically at our misfortunes. And, as they say, there is a reason for everything. We met a professor from nearby Northwestern State University who wants us to speak with the student body about what we are trying to accomplish with To Bring Us Home. How cool is that? More publicity! Spreading the word! I’ll see you all in the morning. We need to watch a movie now, and try to forget about this wacky reality that insists on closing in around us to hold us down. Full moon crazy tonight! Beautiful, magical white fire night. Goodnight!

We have been tired and worn lately, and Jon had been suffering from steady pains, and lately, a cold or the flu. But last night brought great improvement in Jon’s health, and today he is happy, more energetic than we’ve seen in his recent zombie days, and ready to roll on. So we rest today, and film some, and edit and write, and ensure that Jon is stable before we move. Our departure is now set for 1100 am tomorrow morning, and we will use the Force if necessary to convey us onward. The people of Shreveport are very friendly and helpful, and I will miss them, but we have limited time remaining to complete our run. 400 miles to New Orleans in 6 days. Nola and the bike will take us there. Shreveport has emerged from the maelstrom with it’s spirit and sense of humor intact, just as New Orleans has, and this inspires us on to do what we can in the limited time remaining. We will be back, but that is another story…
