What We’re Doing

In August, 2005, Hurricane Katrina practically drowned the city of New Orleans, but the people here retained their fighting spirit, and they are doing what they can to rebuild their homes. Many have been unable to return, and they can use our help.
Grass roots support has proven to be the most effective force driving renewal in New Orleans, and a remarkable group of people who call themselves the St. Bernard Project has made astounding progress towards bringing these former residents home. Liz McCartney, co-founder of the St. Bernard Project, and CNN Hero of the Year 2008, along with her partner Zack Rosenburg, has built an astoundingly powerful organization that has been bringing about meaningful change in the area since 2006 (see the link to her thank you letter at right). Through the directed efforts of thousands of volunteers from around the world, New Orleans is coming home, one family at a time.
In late October/early November of 2009, we made a cross-country bicycle ride to bring attention to the ongoing need for rebuild assistance in New Orleans. We are asking the American people to do what they do best: lend a hand to those in need. The St. Bernard Project is dedicated to enabling the refugees to rebuild their homes, and their lives, and they need us in order to carry on their impressive work. Please explore these pages. This website is a doorway to hope. Welcome!
Bio
Randy MacCaughey was born in Houston, grew up in the Chicago area, and has resided in Tampa, Florida since 1992. He has been employed with United Airlines since 1974, and is also attending the University of South Florida in pursuit of his English degree. After volunteering with the St. Bernard Project, a highly effective grassroots rebuild group in New Orleans, he was compelled to return and further assist in bringing the city’s refugees back home. By way of this website, a cross-country bicycle ride, and further travels to Louisiana, he hopes to reach out to those who have not yet returned home, and present their stories in a book entitled To Bring Us Home. The proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the St. Bernard Project, an organization committed to expediting the rebuild of the St. Bernard Parish, a community left totally uninhabitable by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The St. Bernard Project
The St. Bernard Project embodies volunteers from all over the country, and the world, who come to the St. Bernard Parish, just east of New Orleans, to assist in the rebuild of this community left totally devastated and uninhabitable by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. While the volunteer spirit is alive and well in America, there exists a great need for financial assistance here. Please give as you can to help those who wish to return to their homes. The people of the St. Bernard Parish are very grateful for your generosity.
Thank you!
